Do you have dreams of making money by writing but aren’t sure how to find jobs? Have you heard horror stories about freelance writing jobs paying next to nothing?
I get a LOT of emails from people who have dreams of writing but aren’t sure how to start. And I get emails from people who have tried freelance writing but have given up on finding decent work after disastrous experiences trying to find online writing jobs.
There are better paying freelance writing jobs available, but you won’t find them on Craigslist!
Just like proofreading, there are writing jobs that make real money — and there are jobs that really aren’t worth the time and effort.
If you’re looking to add freelance writing to your income stream (or even want to make it your whole career!), Kevin Fleming has the solution for you.
Hey, Kevin! What’s your story?
Hi Caitlin! I’m from a little town outside of Philadelphia where I currently live with my amazing wife and our two dogs. I love to travel and am very passionate about helping others succeed. I’ve been involved with a few start-ups over the years, the latest being Contena, which is my full-time project right now.
So you’re the founder of Contena. What’s that?
I previously owned a network of financial websites, and we were constantly hiring new writers. It always bugged me that there was no easy way for writers to find great remote gigs like ours without going through a third-party service that would take a percentage of the writer’s earnings. So I wanted to create a tool that helped writers find high-quality remote gigs posted across the internet, and Contena was born.
Contena finds both part-time (contract) and full-time remote writing positions. The full-time positions that we find pay $70,000+ per year on average. We quickly went from adding a few jobs a week to adding dozens every day.
We handpick the jobs we add and do a lot of vetting on the back end to make sure they really are the best. After gaining some momentum, we decided to survey our members and discovered that many of them were completely new to freelance writing. We were also working with many of our members directly to help them create an effective pitch and refine their writing portfolio. Eventually, we launched Contena Academy using what we learned from working with hundreds of writers directly.
So now Contena is a complete system for launching a great freelance writing business. We help you go from zero to hero as a freelance writer. We show you exactly what works from day one with Contena Academy. Once you’ve created your materials using our course, we give you all the tools you need to find the best remote writing gigs.
What type of person should use this tool?
Many of our members are completely new to freelancing, but we have veterans as well. Everyone loves that we only add the best gigs so they can actually write less each month but make more. And our resources, though they were developed to help the novice writer, have been reviewed positively by even those with years of writing experience.
Are people really finding location-independent work using this? Can you share an example?
Our new Wall of Wins is full of great messages from successful members. Our members are finding remote jobs which allow them to reach their personal goals, from spending more time at home with their families to being able to travel and write at the same time.
What if someone wants to polish up their writing skills first?
Although our Academy can show you what is working for our most successful members overall, we also have success coaches that can help with individual writing skills. For example, our coaches can send you daily journals to practice writing, which they then provide careful, constructive feedback to help you better your writing skills. If there is anything else specific you want to develop, your coach can help challenge you to be the best writer you can be.

What I Love about Contena
The Contena Academy is a fantastic training ground for new freelancers, and I’m clearly a fan of training, so I love that. But let me show you the two things that Contena offers that blow away ALL of the other job boards I’ve seen.
Favorite Thing #1: Contena’s Scout Feature
Contena’s Scout feature allows you to search for jobs specific to your parameters. You can search by category, quality level, and more — so you can search smarter, not longer!
This filtering system is much more robust than the majority of job boards out there. And the great news is, the job listings on Contena are going to be much higher quality than the average job board, and your competition will be much smaller (because everyone can check a free board, but far fewer will pay even when their leads are much higher quality).
Favorite Thing #2: The Email Alerts
This goes hand in hand with what I love about the Scout feature — you can take what you want and ignore the rest. Only this time, the leads come to YOU.
Contena’s email alerts are AWESOME because they bring the jobs to you and plunk them right in your inbox.
OMG. What a time saver!
When you’re low on time (and who isn’t?), the Alerts feature will absolutely save you. No more trudging from job board to job board hoping to sift and sort your way to some new gigs. Instead, just check your email! You can get an alert every time a new gig within your parameters is posted, or you can get a daily digest of all the new jobs in one spot. Finding writing work doesn’t get any easier!
Freelance writing is a great option for the work-anywhere lifestyle. But just as with proofreading, you want to find the jobs that offer a good return on your time and effort. Contena does the hard work of sifting through the pile and finds the jobs worth pursuing. Stop spending your time looking for jobs and start putting your writing skills to work making money today!
