What If I Don’t Have a Proofreading/Editing Background?

You may be surprised to know most mainstream editors and proofreaders with a “background” have never seen a transcript before, have no idea you can proofread transcripts for a living, and likely would go about it all wrong … and would still end up needing a course to learn how to do it. It’s a lot different than mainstream proofreading, and there is no editing whatsoever 🙂 Experience is not necessary to “make it”. (Find out what is!) When I started, I was a receptionist answering phones, email and opening mail every day. It is very beneficial to reporters to have someone who has gone through a course in proofreading specific to transcripts. By the end of the course, too, you will HAVE experience — you will be proofreading 50 practice jobs. This is real experience that shouldn’t be overlooked.
