PA Graduates Speak on What Made Them Take the Leap

Got a very inspiring post for you guys today. This time it’s not me writing words to inspire and push you — it’s our PA graduates!

A little background: The PA Community is the crown jewel of Proofread Anywhere.

If you’re not a student, you might think the course (and especially the marketing material!) is the best part, but if you ask any student what their favorite part of the course is, I’d be willing to bet they’d all say that the community is the best part. For many, it’s what keeps them going.

(But be careful — spending too much time looking at what everyone else is doing can backfire!)

Both the student and graduate groups are full of AMAZING people. PA wouldn’t be what it is if it weren’t for the community.

So today I’m sharing a group post from a PA graduate, Amanda, asking her fellow grads for the moment in their lives that made them decide to take the leap…

My, oh my, the stories that were shared in response. I hope you’ll find them as inspiring as I do.

(You can read the article Amanda posted here.)

(If you’re a member of PA Graduate Huddle, you can click here to see the original post.)

OMG, right?! At this point, I had to jump in and say something…

Then MORE stories came in.

Your Turn

What about you? What’s your story? Or is something holding you back?

  1. This is great! I knew I wanted to make this a full-time gig for me about a year after I started what I thought would be my dream job. I graduated college in 2014 and, 10 months later, found my job at a local magazine. I genuinely loved it for about 14 months. Then I began to realize all the aspects I didn’t like: sitting behind a desk all day, not really writing what I wanted to write, feeling like I wasn’t a part of the culture we were writing on, figuring out that my earning potential was most likely permanently capped at my entry-level salary. Even though my coworkers were fantastic and I enjoyed the work the simple majority of the time, I realized that my job could easily be done in 30 hours a week (or fewer), but I was forced to be there 40. I hated being chained to my desk, particularly when there was no work to do.

So I came across PA as this was becoming apparent for the first time, and PA immediately jumped out as the way to get the life I want, a life where I could travel and be dependent on no one but myself. (My parents are small-business owners, so I’ve been a bit spoiled as far as that goes.) It’s taken me far longer to get through the course than I wanted partially because of my schedule (full-time job, some other freelancing I’m doing, etc.) but also because of anxiety and depression I’ve been fighting for years that is trying desperately to hold me back. An infuriating event at my work a few weeks ago has made me realize it’s time to step up, get this course finished, and get started on the life I want!

    1. Chelsea! You sound exactly like me. Hating the desk job life, feeling like your job could be done in less time, etc. I’ve had PA on my radar for a while and I really think it’s time for me to take the leap. I also suffer from anxiety and depression, but the freelance lifestyle is something that would help my anxiety…more flexibility to take care of myself, go to therapy, etc. Your story has inspired me!

  2. This post could have not came at a better time. I have been wanting to start this program for quite awhile. Everything points to I just need to change my life. So I will be taking the plunge around the end of April. These stories are very encouraging. Currently I am around a lot of negative people at my current job and they think I am crazy for wanting to leave and do freelancing. But I try to surround myself at other times with positive people and read positive posts.

    1. We’re so glad you felt inspired by the post! PA came into our lives when we all needed it most. I hope it all works out for you too! 🙂

  3. I too, have read and researched PA. One year later, I made the decision to make a difference in my personal life. Marriage is very important to the both me and my husband, who is retired now. My husband has health concerns that needs monitoring; going in to punch a clock for someone else is and has become more boring since starting PA. I am now waiting on my ipad to continue. I can thank Caitlin for sharing her expertise with us all to move on in our lives.
    Have fun, I am!

    1. Thank you for sharing! PA has made a difference in so many lives! Wishing you and your husband all the best on this new adventure! 🙂

  4. I have a chronic medical condition, along with depression and anxiety, all of which make it extremely difficult for me to show up to a 40 hour a week job. I’ve been on disability but that ship has sailed and I am now on my own. A job where I can work from home is the answer for me. Although I have never proofread for a living, I have worked many years as an executive assistant and in marketing where I proofread many technical documents. I even proofread the novels I read! Grammatical and punctuation errors drive me crazy! Everything I’ve read tonight tells me this is the right direction for me. Of course, fear and doubt hold me back.

  5. You’re not alone in feeling fear and doubt. I would say MOST, if not ALL, of us feel those feelings when we’re starting something new. Don’t let those feelings hold you back from accomplishing your goals! 🙂

  6. Oooh! Good thread. Been getting your emails for about a month now. Everything sounds good! I know I could do this. I wrote a paper in college and got credit for a course. One paper gave me credit for one course! So what’s holding me back? I admit I’m a slacker. I guess that’s it really. I know, it sounds crazy that I would admit that. But also I am enjoying an incredible time of peace in my life, so I’m not moving too fast in any direction! lol! Laugh with me! With that said, I’m continuing to enjoy the emails and I really believe your course is a strong possibility for me going forward! Thank you! 🙂
