I’m a newbie… will taking the Transcript Proofreading course help me get clients?

One of our subscribers wrote in and asked:

If I have never proofread for money and have no past clients, how do I get the first client?

GREAT QUESTION! So what’s the verdict? Can you get clients as a newbie?

YES, YES, a THOUSAND TIMES YES! ALL of my students so far who have successfully completed my course had never (EVER) seen a transcript before training with me. And now they’ve got clients and are earning regular income from their work. I am always learning new things, as are court reporters, so you’ll regularly come across things you’ve never seen before. How to deal is part of what you learn in the course.

This course plain works. It is designed to get you clients fresh out of the gate. By the time you complete it, you will have learned more than I knew when I first started (assuming you take your time and really absorb it — hurrying through is not recommended).

The course includes an entire module dedicated to helping you find clients, including exactly what to say to them when you first contact them.

PLUS — all students get access to the private Facebook group where you can talk to other students, help each other with resumes, ask grammar/punctuation questions, and share success stories.

What about when an agency asks for my resume? They’ll see I’m new!

By completing this course, you earn the right to make it part of your resume.

This is not a drop-in-the-bucket, get-rich-quick, gimmicky course you may find elsewhere on the internet.

This is (literally) the only course teaching this information available anywhere. That says something.

Before this course existed, transcript proofreaders had to wing it — and to this day, I’ve never met anyone proofreading transcripts who earns as much money from it as I do.

And most of the time, their methods are slow, inefficient, and outdated.

Actually, the way I learned to proofread was on paper. But I wouldn’t have had the success I’ve had if I’d continued to do it the way I was initially taught. I know what I’m doing. That’s why it’s a HUGE PLUS for you to learn from someone who knows the ropes as well as I do.

Because I started from scratch as a proofreader, and have been through just about every scenario imaginable, I’m able to include all of my experience and expertise over the years in bite-sized chunks within each module of the course. From various client scenarios (what happens if you miss something?!) to how much to charge, the course covers every aspect of the business — from A to Z.

Just Not Sure You’re Good at Proofreading?

NOW… if you want to take this course, and you’re not sure whether or not you are a good proofreader, you probably should not take this course. At least not all of it (students go through the course in sections, not all at once).

On the other hand, if you’ve grown up most of your life with a love for words and an undeniable eye for spotting errors (where your people know they can trust you to proofread stuff for them), and you’re looking for a good way to monetize your skills, I urge you to start now.

I’ll say it bluntly: This course can’t make you good at seeing errors. If you are NOT a spelling person, or a grammar person, or a words person, please don’t invest in any portion of the course beyond Module 2 (Word Skills). Either you’ve got the eye, or you don’t 🙂 Chances are if you’re reading this, you’ve got the eye, but I like to be as straightforward as possible.

Still not convinced newbies have a shot?

Check out the post “How Do I Know You’re Not the Exception?” in which we go into detail about how well the course prepares even those with no experience for proofreading transcripts. You’ll hear from student Alicia, who earned over $1,100 in her very first month as a proofreader — despite her full-time job, two kids, lack of experience, and lack of an English degree!

  1. Caitlin, this post was so thorough and answered all of my questions as a true newbie to proofreading. I was worried about the level of knowledge/experience needed to take your course. 2. Hi

I’m interested in the course but would I have to pay the fee in full or can it be paid in payments?

Where would I get job listings for a proofreading job?

  3. Hi Caitlin,

I’m already halfway through the introductory, free course you offer. I’d like to know how much your regular course will cost and if there is a payment plan offered. I’m very interested in this work. It seems like it would be kind of a fun challenge but also a good part-time gig to my and my husband’s cooking career.

    Thanks!

    1. Thanks, Eagle Eye 😀 I’ve read that so many times and I think every single time I thought it was a comma. Haha 😀

      1. You used a capital “T” on “That’s” after the period. There’s no problem there. 🙂

  5. Hi Caitlin,

I’m thankful to be learning so much from the 7-Day Course and look forward to getting started with the main course soon. I’ve sent you an email to also discuss a very popular question you’re quite familiar with. :0) Thanks for all you do!

    1. You are welcome 🙂 You should have gotten a response back 🙂

  8. I’m almost finished with your free 7-Day Course, and I would also like to know the price of the main course, as well as any payment plan options! Everything that I have read so far is very informative. Thank you for being so great!

  9. Hi Caitlin!
I’ve been looking over your entire website very thoroughly for the past week. I’m a very detail oriented person and I like to research things extensively before diving head first into them. I’ve taken your free 7 day course, and I’ve read almost everything there is to read about you and the work you do, including outside reviews of your course. I’m really starting to believe that this may be the path for me.
For months now, I’ve been looking for something that will allow me to earn money from anywhere. My fiance travels for his work (he’s a welder that takes contracting jobs all over the United States), and it is incredibly heart breaking not being able to go with him, or at the very least visit him regularly. He’s gone anywhere from 1 to 6 months at a time (right now he is in Minnesota for 4 months with no allotted time off to come home).
I stumbled across your website through a an article on Penny Hoarder (http://www.thepennyhoarder.com/work-from-home-freelance-proofreading/ ) while I was researching various different ways to make money from anywhere. I also read a review of your course on Anywhere & Anytime (http://anywherenanytime.com/transcript-proofreading-theory-and-practice-review-of-an-online-proofreading-course-that-delivers ) and after all of this, I’m very VERY interested in your course and what it has to offer.
I saw quite a few people commenting about whether there were payment options for your course, and I’m also very curious of this. I’d love to take the course and learn what I can from it, and hopefully learn to do what you do for a living, so I can scratch my traveling itch. My only concern is budgeting the money so I can afford to buy your course outright.
Please let me know if you’re available for payment plans! I’m very interested. I’d love to one day never step foot in a warehouse again, or plead for personal time off from my job to go visit my fiance for the first time in months!
    Thank you,
    Tiffany

  10. Hi Caitlin!

I am currently taking the free 7-Day Course. It’s fun and informative!

Would you please send me the cost information of the Transcript Proofreading Course?

Thank you for all you do!
    Eva 🙂

  11. So far, so good with your free course. Lots of information to absorb. I’m very interested in the specific details of your course. What is the total cost for the course and is a payment plan available? Thanks for your help with the newbies!

  12. Hi,

Thanks for the informative 7-day course. I am really interested in the business. I have been homeschooling, my kids are going back to school and I would like to earn extra money from home, this sounds great. Can you send me the information on cost for complete course and payment options. Thank you! Angel

  13. It is great to see there are others out there with the same doubts as me. I am still not sure if I can do this; in a sense I know I can, but still doubt myself. This really does appear to be right up my alley. I’m a perfectionist at heart and I really want a job I can do from home with flexible hours. I am just so terrified of committing and spending money on something that I later find was much more difficult than I thought. It is a scary leap; still not sure if I should try.

    1. Hello, Bre! Check out our course overview page. Everyone now starts at the Jumpstart level, which has a lower cost of entry, and you can still apply what you pay for Jumpstart to one of the other levels should you decide to go beyond it. We want everyone to be very sure this is what they want to do before spending any more money beyond that! Wishing you all the best. Let us know if you have any questions! We’re here to help. 🙂

  14. Hi Caitlin,

I watched the video last night, and I believe proofreading would be a fantastic job for me. Do you have any kind of payment plan? The cost is the only thing keeping me from starting right now. The pandemic has wreaked havoc on my finances.
